Young Zoo Keepers take action to stop wildlife trafficking
Junior Zoo Keepers from the National Zoo in Canberra have chosen TRAFFIC as the beneficiary of their annual Conservation Celebration Day.
A group of Junior Zookeepers from Canberra National Zoo have chosen to donate profits from their Conservation Celebration Day to TRAFFIC.
The youngsters raised 2,500 Australian dollars which they donated to TRAFFIC’s Big Give Christmas Challenge – which sees every donation matched pound for pound, doubling donor impact to stop illegal wildlife trade.
TRAFFIC Director of Development Andrea Diez de Sollano said:
This is a wonderful contribution to our work fighting the illegal wildlife trade. It shows a deep understanding of what is driving extinctions and nature-loss. I want to thank each one of these young people for raising money for TRAFFIC and supporting our work to stop wildlife trafficking.”
The National Zoo developed its Junior Zoo Keeper (JZK) program for students with a keen in interest in animals. It delves into the nitty gritty, and often dirty side, of caring for animals. JZKs learn about enclosure design, animal enrichment, animal wellbeing, breeding & conservation, the preparation of appropriate diets, and the clean up after feeding.

JZK is a great way for children to get out the house, learn about conservation, meet different people from all walks of life, and learn about how to become a zookeeper and build their love for animals,”
