Remembering Dr Jane Goodall DBE: A Lifetime of Compassion, Leadership, and Hope

Today, the world lost one of its most extraordinary voices for nature.

Dr Jane Goodall inspired generations with her groundbreaking research on chimpanzees, her tireless advocacy for wildlife, and her unwavering belief in the power of people to create positive change.

Every single one of us makes a difference every day — it is up to us as to the kind of difference we make”  — Dr Jane Goodall.

From the forests of Gombe to the halls of the United Nations, Jane showed us that caring for the natural world is inseparable from caring for humanity.

And her leadership extended beyond research. Jane was one of the first global figures to warn of the dangers of illegal and unsustainable wildlife trade, calling it not only a threat to biodiversity but also a driver of human suffering and disease.

“No organisation on its own, no country on its own, can effectively stop the illegal wildlife trade that knows no borders. Only through our collective efforts, continued collaboration across borders can we stamp out this cruel and devastating trade, wildlife trafficking. Together we simply must.” — Dr jane goodall.

These convictions echo deeply with our mission at TRAFFIC and continue to guide efforts to end wildlife crime worldwide.

Jane’s legacy is not only the science she pioneered, but the millions of people she mobilised to act — especially through the Jane Goodall Institute and its Roots & Shoots programme, which empowers young people to care for their communities, animals, and the environment.

We at TRAFFIC join countless others around the world in mourning her passing, but also in celebrating the extraordinary life she led. May her message of hope and responsibility continue to inspire action for generations to come.

To honour Dr Goodall’s memory, we encourage you to support the ongoing work of the Jane Goodall Institute — keeping alive her vision of a just, sustainable world for people, animals, and the planet we share.
