Trade in marine ornamental fish is an important source of livelihoods for coastal communities. But unsustainable and/or unregulated collection of ornamental fish may be damaging reef habitats and threatening wild populations of marine fish species.
Kenya is the largest exporter of marine ornamental fish in the Western Indian Ocean. The trade supports between 192-200 licensed collectors and contributes significantly to coastal livelihoods. Kenyan exporters supply high-value species to global markets, leveraging efficient supply chains and proximity to Mombasa airport.

Kenya’s marine ornamental fish trade faces challenges due to incomplete data and a lack of specific legislation. The government is developing a fisheries management plan to improve sustainability and address key data gaps. If well-regulated, this trade could provide a profitable alternative to food fish while supporting local livelihoods and preserving marine biodiversity for future generations.
TRAFFIC will be a critical partner in the implementation of Kenya's Marine Ornamental Fishery Management Plan, which was officially gazetted (launched by government) in September 2025. It brings a suite of protections, regulations, and trade frameworks into force, with TRAFFIC named as an ongoing member of its Management Committee - charged with overseeing its effective implementation and identifying any data, regulatory, and other gaps to ensure the protection of Kenya's ornamental fish, as well as those who harvest and trade in them.
